HOW TO WRITE A GREAT CV - These little things make all the difference!!

INTRO

CV Writing Hints and Tips: I would say over the last 17 years I’ve probably read millions of CV’s and submitted thousands of them to clients and hiring managers for review. My clients have always provided feedback to me about what they like and don’t like in CV’s so using that information and my own knowledge of the recruitment industry, I’ve put together AskVerity’s top 5 CV hints & tips and I’d like to share them with you…….

Here’s Verity’s top 5 tips, in reverse order.

5, SHOUT ABOUT YOUR ACHIEVEMENTS

Don’t just be a list of key tasks and duties…….anybody can do that and I guarantee they will have lots of CV’s of people with similar experience. Tell them about your achievements as well. Did you win employee of the month due to providing outstanding customer service? Save the company £1000’s by implementing a new procedure? Develop a staff member to become an outstanding achiever within your team? TELL THEM!!! These are all great ‘bragging rights’ and the things that will land you that interview for your dream job

4, HIGHLIGHT YOUR RELEVANT EXPERIENCE

If working as part of an effective team and building strong customer relationships are top of their list of priorities, ensure your experience in these areas is clearly highlighted and put it at the top of your key tasks and duties in your relevant roles – the easier your CV is for the recruiter the read – the better!!!

3, INCLUDE YOUR CONTACT DETAILS

So the person screening CV’s loves the sound of your experience, you’re the strongest contender for the role, you have all of the relevant experience…….next stage is a telephone interview…..you’ve left your telephone number off your CV…….DOH!!! (Yes, they can still email you, but you may go to the bottom of the list if you’ve forgotten something so critical)

2, KEEP YOUR FORMATTING STANDARD

If half of your CV is in Times New Roman and half in Comics Sans and the first bullet point of the person specification is ‘strong attention to detail’ there’s a very strong possibility of your application being bypassed completely. Make sure your CV is all in the same font and format, this is your first (and possible only) chance to make a great impression!!

And Verity’s top tip….

1, MAKE SURE IT'S IN CHRONOLOGICAL ORDER

This is SO important! I still see CV’s now that start with people’s first ever role and work down to their current role. With all due respect if you’re applying for a Scientist role with me and you started your career working in a fast-food restaurant it really is of no significance. If your CV is the ‘wrong way round’ this could result in you not be considered for an interview.
