WHAT NOT TO DO IN AN INTERVIEW.
INTRO
Here at AskVerity we specialise in supporting individuals with interview coaching.
We’re currently living in a very competitive recruitment market with a lot more people on the market and less opportunities available.
We thought we’d produce this blog outlining the top 10 things not to do in an interview to help you knock the socks off the next people you find yourself being interviewed by!!
Let’s dive in and see what you really should avoid
Being Unprepared
Failing to research the company. It’s really key that you’ve thoroughly researched the company you’re going to meet with. Things to look at include their values, what they do, when they were formed, where are they based and how many employees they have. It may also help to look at their competitors or any recent big industry news relevant to their sector.
Dressing Inappropriately
Wearing clothes that don’t fit the company culture or are too casual can create a poor first impression. You only get one chance to make a first impression so make it count – nothing too revealing for the ladies and definitely no tracksuits, shorts, jeans or baseball caps!!

How to Prepare for a Job Interview
Welcome to blog number 3!! As I’ve given you some great CV tips in my last blog I thought I
best follow this up with some interview tips too……..
Talking Too Much or Too Little
Rambling, interrupting, or giving overly brief answers can both hurt your chances. Aim for clear, concise, and relevant responses. One main point we also talk about at AskVerity is that you answer the question that has been posed to you – then shut up!!!
Criticising Previous Employers or Colleagues
Speaking negatively about past jobs or coworkers raises concerns about your professionalism and attitude. Your last employer or boss may have been awful but don’t slag them off too much – you never know who knows who!!
Failing to Ask Questions
Not asking thoughtful questions at the end of the interview shows a lack of interest or preparation. We suggest at AskVerity that you have your questions written out prior to interview just in case your mind goes blank.
Poor Body Language
Slouching, avoiding eye contact, or fidgeting can signal nervousness or disinterest, as can having your arms folded in front of you. Be open, smiling and attentive – keep good eye contact as well without staring them out!
Lying or Exaggerating
Dishonesty about skills or experience is often detected and can ruin your credibility, believe us, they will find out if you’ve lied about your skill set. A staggering 65% of people lie on their CVs – don’t be one of them when it comes to interview.
Being Too Personal or Unprofessional
Oversharing personal details or behaving inappropriately makes you seem unprofessional. BIG tip – don’t call the interviewer mate or if it’s a woman, worse still, love!!
Not Checking Technology (for virtual interviews)
Technical issues due to lack of preparation can disrupt the interview and reflect poorly on you. Ensure you’re logged on to the tech a good 5 minutes before to make sure everything is working, ensure you’ve got a good connection and good lighting so they can see you.
Not Interpreting Questions Correctly
Misunderstanding questions and answering off-topic shows poor listening skills. If you’re unsure what has been asked, ask them to repeat the question.
CLOSING COMMENTS
Avoiding these mistakes will help you present yourself as a confident, prepared, and professional candidate that has lots to offer a future employer!!
