As a recruiter and job search coach I’m an advocate of recruitment agencies – I know they get a bad wrap at times but if you can find the right people to support your job hunt, they really are worth their weight in gold.

- The main benefit of using an agency is that you can access hidden vacancies. Many roles are filled through agencies and never appear on public job boards, so you gain access to opportunities you’d otherwise miss out on.
- Faster route to interviews: Recruiters already have relationships with hiring managers, so your CV can reach decision‑makers more quickly than through cold applications. Also the recruiter can ‘sell’ you and your skills to the hiring managers directly.
- Tailored job matching: Agencies screen your skills and experience, then match you with roles that fit your profile rather than you applying blindly to many adverts. They will provide you with advice and guidance on what roles match your skill set most closely to save you wasting time applying for roles you don’t stand a chance of getting.
- Market insight and salary advice: Recruiters know what employers are paying and what skills are in demand, so they can help you pitch your expectations realistically.
- Reduced admin and follow‑up: Agencies coordinate interviews, handle queries, and can negotiate offers and start dates on your behalf. They can also help to advise what the interview process will look like and should know if you will face competency- based or values-based interview questions.
My best advice for anyone on the job market is find a good recruiter, someone who specialises in your field and geographical area and someone who is established – the longer they’ve been doing it the better they will be and the more use they’ll be to you in your job hunt.
