JOBS CONSIGNED TO HISTORY...
Don’t forget to share:
Here at AskVerity we love a bit of history, so we thought we’d dedicate this blog to a bit of fun and talk about jobs that no longer exist. Happy reading!!
Knocker-upper
Do you struggle to get out of bed in the morning – you could do with one of these. A Knocker-upper was a human alarm clock hired to wake workers before affordable alarm clocks existed; common in UK industrial towns until the mid-20th century.
Gong Farmer
We definitely don’t fancy this one! Gong Farmers were night workers who cleaned out human waste (“night soil”) from privies and cesspits before modern sewage systems were available. Essential in medieval early modern cities!
Leech Collector
Collected live leeches, usually by wading into water, for use in medical bloodletting. Thank goodness modern medicine has moved on!
Slubber Doffer
If you’re a fan of The Great British Sewing Bee you’ll love this one – Slubber Doffer’s removed empty bobbins from machines in textile mills; often performed by children before automation.
Pin Setter
This individual was responsible for resetting bowling pins manually before the invention of automatic pinsetters in bowling alleys. STRIKE!!
Factory Lector
We think this sounds like a great job! A Factory Lector read literature out loud to entertain factory workers, especially in cigar factories. This job faded away due to automation and social changes.
Projectionist
Are you a cinema fan? Did you know that a projectionist used to be the person that would sit and project films from the back of the cinema before digital projection technology. A lot of these people were men that had been disfigured during the war who didn’t want to show their faces in public. ☹
And finally,.,,,,
Switchboard Operator
A Switchboard Operator used to manually connect telephone calls by plugging wires into switchboards before automated systems replaced them!
We hope you’ve enjoyed the history lessons on old school job titles!!
